About Subedar in the Indian Army
The Subedar serves as the senior JCO of a company or equivalent sub-unit. Subedars are responsible for the discipline, welfare, and morale of 100-120 soldiers. They advise the Company Commander (Major/Captain) on matters related to troops, traditions, and local culture. In combat, a Subedar may independently command a platoon or outpost. The Subedar is the most respected JCO in a rifle company.
