Latest update · April 2026

Read our 8th Pay Commission Latest News 2026 update covering the commission's constitution, chairperson appointment, terms of reference, and the projected fitment factor driving your new basic pay.

Basic Pay

The foundation of your salary, determined by your pay level in the government pay matrix. Under the 7th CPC (2016), each level has a specific basic pay. The 8th CPC is expected to adjust this using a fitment factor (est. 1.92x), increasing basic pay by approx 92%.

Example: Level 10 (7th CPC) ₹56,100 → (8th CPC) ₹107,712

Dearness Allowance (DA)

DA offsets inflation and is revised biannually. As of January 2026, DA stands at 60% of basic pay. In the 8th CPC, DA is expected to reset to 0%, merging the previous DA into Basic Pay.

Calculation: DA = Basic Pay × (Rate / 100)

House Rent Allowance (HRA)

Since DA has crossed 50%, HRA rates have been revised. Cities are classified into X, Y, and Z. The current rates are 30% (X-Class), 20% (Y-Class), and 10% (Z-Class) of Basic Pay.

Current rates (DA > 50%): X 30% · Y 20% · Z 10%

Travel Allowance (TA)

A fixed monthly amount for commuting, varying by city category. You also earn “DA on TA” (Dearness Allowance calculated on the TA amount), which provides a dual benefit.

Note: You earn DA on top of TA (DA on TA)

NPS / UPS Contribution

Employees appointed after Jan 1, 2004, contribute 10% of (Basic + DA). Effective April 2025, you can choose between NPS (market-linked) or UPS (guaranteed 50% pension). The deduction remains 10% for both.

Deduction: 10% of (Basic + DA)

Income Tax Deduction

Income Tax is calculated on annual gross income using FY 2025-26 tax slabs. Tax is deducted monthly via TDS. Final liability depends on your choice between the Old and New Tax Regimes.

Note: Based on FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) slabs

Important note

This calculator uses official 7th CPC pay matrices currently in effect. For 8th CPC, the 1.92x fitment factor is a commonly discussed estimate, but the actual official factor will be confirmed when the 8th CPC is formally notified by the Government of India. Always verify your official salary with your employer's payroll department.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about government salary calculations

How is DA calculated and when does it change?
DA is a percentage of basic pay revised quarterly by the Ministry of Finance based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Currently at 60%, it increases during inflation and decreases during deflation. Check the DoPT website for latest DA rates.
Which city category do I fall under for HRA?
Your city category is determined by your official posting location. X-Class includes metros (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore), Y-Class has major cities, and Z-Class has other towns. Verify with your HR department for your official classification.
What is the fitment factor and why does it matter?
The fitment factor multiplies your 7th CPC basic pay to calculate 8th CPC basic pay. A 1.92 factor means a 92% increase. This directly impacts DA, HRA, and TA since they're calculated as percentages of basic pay.
Is NPS mandatory for all government employees?
NPS is mandatory for employees appointed after January 1, 2004. Employee contribution is 10% of (Basic + DA). Employees appointed before this date may be under the old pension scheme.
How is income tax calculated on government salary?
Income tax is calculated on annual gross income using FY 2025-26 tax slabs. Tax is deducted monthly via TDS. Deductions like Section 80C, HRA claims, and insurance reduce your taxable income.
What is CGHS and why is it deducted?
CGHS (Central Government Health Scheme) provides healthcare benefits for employees and families. The monthly contribution (₹500-1000) is deducted from salary in exchange for coverage at CGHS-empaneled hospitals.
Can I adjust the fitment factor to see different scenarios?
Yes! The slider lets you adjust the fitment factor from 1.0 to 3.0 to explore different salary scenarios. This helps with financial planning for different commission outcomes.
Are these calculations accurate for all government employees?
This calculator uses standard CPC pay matrices for Central Government employees. Special cadres (Armed Forces, Judges, AICTE) may have different structures. Verify with your HR department for accuracy.
When will the 8th CPC be officially implemented?
As of January 2026, the 8th CPC is under review. No official implementation date has been announced yet. Follow official DoPT notifications for updates.
Can I use this for loan and mortgage applications?
Banks typically require 3-6 months of actual salary slips for official applications. Use this calculator to understand your salary structure, but always provide verified payslips from your employer for official documents.
